Hi everyone,
I’m currently reveling in the joy of my winter wardrobe. Which for all you know could be:
As someone who finds sweatpants deeply romantic and stirring, I take such joy in never really having to get dressed this time of year. My coat is a walking sleeping bag, so every outfit or non-outfit I put on is getting covered.
There’s a romance (my kind of romance) to being bundled up, emerging from our cozy hibernation zone homes only when we have to: to get pancake mix, stock up on more trash bags, do laundry, or refresh our canisters of coffee beans. Seeing people tired and in sweats and with bedhead hair is endlessly comforting to me.
And, yes, ROMANTIC!
This movie was (and probably still is, it’s been a minute) the most romantic movie to me as a kid. The magic of a snow day and a love triangle. Truly what more could you ever want. The scene in the indoor pool when Emmanuelle Chriqui is swimming and something with a whale anklet happens. When the snow plow man dips fries in the ketchup blob that for some reason is on Josh Peck’s coat (I forget most of this plot, I was focused on the love story of it all). Jean Smart. It’s a great movie.
Sure, the reasons behind the slide into public sleepwear frankly aren’t all that inspiring or uplifting, but darkness right after lunch makes me feel like we’re all at a slumber party (does this make malaise more fun?). Where spring and summer are months that seek adventure and exploration, winter is a time of burrowing, comfort, introspection, solitude, hibernation, intimacy.
And New Years has never been a festive, sparkly break from my hermit tendencies. If I do ever dare go to gathering of some kind that’s more than two of very close friends in pajamas, I usually slip out the door without any goodbyes by 10:30pm latest so I can be in bed with a book and some pasta by midnight.
This year, I’m dramatically breaking this longstanding tradition because I’ll be at a black tie wedding in Miami. I’m planning a New Years outfit for the first time in probably 10 years. And a little peek into how that’s going: I accidentally went to Midtown yesterday (the day after Christmas) with the impossible mission to find a pair of silver heels that don’t activate my bunions. I did a DSW sandwich with Macys and Nordstrom in between. Have you ever been to Macys during Christmas? I lasted 2.5 minutes. And no, I’m not ok. But I will be in 1.5 days. And while I will not have Fran by my side at this event, I can’t help but imagine how we’d dress up as a duo:
And of course, we can’t have a New Years celebration without hors d'oeuvres:
Should Fran and I start a catering business? Are we not culinary geniuses????
Wishing you all a cozy and delicious New Year.

I have passed cozy vibes down to my preteen son and now we both know the art of being cozy and it RULES
